Event formats
Game day
Pace of play
Unless otherwise noted, we'll have a quick players meeting at 8:45 AM. Play starts at 9:00 AM sharp. Everything is tracked in Volleyball Life to make posting playoffs seamless and quick.
| Pool size | Format |
|---|---|
| Pools of 4 | Two sets to 21 (cap at 23) |
| Pools of 5 | Depends on number of teams in the division and net space |
| Pools of 6 | One set to 25 (cap at 27) |
| Pools of 7 | One set to 21 (cap at 23) |
Points may vary for mini tournaments, pop-up events or other special formats.
Late arrivals
We start play at 9:00 AM sharp! Starting at 9:05 AM, teams not on their court and ready to play lose 1 point per minute and forfeit the game at 9:20 AM. The second set is forfeited at 9:30 AM.
Tiebreaker policy
Pool play ties are broken by a play-in set to 15 points, no cap.
If time doesn't allow a play-in set, ties are broken with the following criteria (also used for ties that don't affect playoff entry):
- The winner of the head-to-head matchup gets the higher seed.
- If teams split head-to-head, the point differential from those head-to-head matches breaks the tie.
- If still tied, overall point differential from all pool play matches breaks the tie.
Weather policy
Grass and sand volleyball is played rain or shine unless conditions become unsafe (lightning, severe weather). Any delays or cancellations will be communicated by email and/or text.
Note: weather policies may vary by venue, field or park regulations. If a host facility's policies differ from ours, the venue's policies take precedence and will be communicated in advance whenever possible.
Rules of play
Grass & beach rules
For grass and beach, we follow AVP rules.
Coed courtesy rule
- In coed doubles, men must serve to the man's half of the court. Women may serve to either side.
- One missed courtesy serve is allowed per set with no fault (no replay).
- Any missed courtesy serve after that is a fault and loss of serve.
RevCo rules
- RevCo is played on a women's height net.
- Men can only attack from behind the 10-foot line.
- If a male puts the ball over the net from in front of the 10-foot line, the entire ball must be below the tape when contacted.
- No courtesy rule in RevCo.
Fair play & conduct
Sandbagging
Sandbagging is when a player competes in a division below their skill level, and it's strictly prohibited. If a player is in a lower division than their skills indicate, the Tournament Director may disqualify the player(s). Disqualified players do not receive a refund.
Not sure which division to play? Email info@btbvolleyball.com and our team is happy to help!
Sub policy
No substitutions once play has started, except for medical injuries. You may substitute a player of equal or lower skill; your team can finish pool play but can't advance to playoffs, regardless of record or points. Triples teams may compete with two players.
Sportsmanlike conduct
The Tournament Director may remove teams and/or players from play for excessive profanity, belligerence and/or unsportsmanlike conduct. Please help us make the day more enjoyable for everyone!
